Tamarack Jacket Pattern Overview:
Designed with the transitional seasons in mind, the Tamarack Jacket is a warm and stylish quilted coat perfect for spring and fall layering. Follow one of the two quilting designs included, or design your own to make your Tamarack totally original to you! You’ll stay toasty thanks to the inner layer of cotton or wool batting, while the roomy welt pockets will keep your belongings safe and your hands warm. Techniques involved include straight seams, basic quilting, sewing darts, inserting welt pockets, and applying bias binding.
  • Printed Paper Pattern
  • Final Product: Wearables / Clothing
  • Technique: Standard Machine Sewing
  • Skill Level: Intermediate
Why is this a 2 Day Class?
  • Step 1 - Preparing a quilt that will be "cut up" to make the jacket or if you have a quilt at home that you want to cut up.
  • Step 2 - Constructing the jacket (You will bring Pre-Quilted Pattern Sections to class, All Cutting for the Jacket will happen during Session 2 class)
1st Day of Class Session one Activities:
  • Measure everyone and determine the size of your jacket - pattern sizes are traditionally different than the size you buy in a store.
  • Trace your pattern onto Pattern Ease. (Beehive has pattern ease)
  • Jacket pattern - ask to make sure you are buying the right size
  • Decide what design and fabric to make your quilt out of.  Ask questions about making your quilt, so that your jacket can be cut out during session 2.  Between Session 1 and Session 2 make your quilt top. Quilt your quilt and prewash the quilt prior to Session 2.

What to do before Session two:
  • Decide on the pattern you want to use for your quilt.
    • QuiltSmart fusible interfacing and or Ten Sisters Fusible Grid Interfacing can be used for the design.  We have the Double Wedding Ring and On Point fusible.  Beehive has 1 inch, 1.5 inch, 2.0 inch and 2.5 inch square fusiable interfacing available for making a variety of patterns.
  • Select fabric
    • I used a layer cake but you can also use yardage for the outside of the jacket.
    • Lining fabric.  I purchased 4 yards which was more than I needed but I will use for the binding.
Supplies needed (For Part 2 of Class)
  • Sewing machine or Serger
  • Normal sewing notions (scissors, etc)
  • Irons and ironing boards provided
  • Jacket pattern - wait to purchase until you know your size can ask at Session 1
  • Pattern Tracing Paper
